Climate Adaptation Strategies Towards Prevention of Violent Extremism in Wajir County, Kenya

The intersection of climate change and security is increasingly recognised by Kenyan policymakers working in security and climate governance. Despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts, radical groups continue to exploit vulnerabilities in Kenya, particularly in areas facing extreme weather events and resource scarcity. This study examines how climate adaptation strategies, supported by climate technology innovation and regional cooperation, can serve as peacebuilding tools to reduce susceptibility to extremist recruitment. Using a mixed-methods approach grounded in social-ecological systems theory, the research integrates systematic reviews and case studies to assess locally grounded interventions. Findings highlight the potential of renewable energy, smart agriculture, early warning systems, and inclusive water governance in enhancing ecological and socio-political stability. The study recommends positioning climate adaptation as a central pillar of peacebuilding by fostering partnerships between communities and carbon project developers, empowering local actors in resource governance, and integrating Indigenous knowledge with formal institutions. It concludes that embedding climate adaptation within national and county security planning, supported by accessible climate finance and community-led governance, can transform adaptation from a reactive response to a proactive peacebuilding tool. Strengthening partnerships among security institutions, local governments, and communities will be key to operationalising a holistic climate-security framework capable of fostering long-term stability. Enhancing cross-border collaboration can also address the root drivers of radicalisation and promote long-term resilience in Wajir county and other climate-stressed environments.
